What Is Quietly Happening
Behind the Boom

Matcha was once a quiet ritual.
Today, it has become a global icon.

From Los Angeles to London, matcha now sits alongside lattes
and espresso as part of everyday life.
That, in itself, is something worth celebrating.
But behind this growing popularity, something else is quietly happening.
The foundations that have supported Japan’s tea culture for generations are beginning to disappear.
The problem is not that matcha is becoming popular.

The problem is that the culture
that made matcha possible may no longer be sustainable.

Why We Started Wasui

As Japanese people living abroad, we became increasingly
aware of how deeply Japanese culture is appreciated around the world.

Japanese design.
Japanese aesthetics.
Japanese food.
And matcha.

We felt proud to see it embraced by so many people.
At the same time, we began to notice a growing distance from its origins.
Where it was grown.
Who cultivated it.

What kind of land shaped its character.
The stories behind it were becoming harder and harder to see.
Wasui was created as a response to that distance.

What We Choose

Wasui was not created simply to sell matcha.
It was created to help carry Japanese tea culture into the future.
We work directly with tea farmers.
We share the character of each region.
And we bring forward the stories behind every bowl.
Not to explain Japan.
But to help people experience it.

Every Bowl Has a Story
